Description

Acrylic and water based oils on canvas, around 90x 120 cm
Year 12 final piece.
I wanted to convey a message contrary to the popular image of muslim women in western society. I'm not muslim myself, but I have friends who are muslim and so felt obliged to express what I feel about this issue. Western media often associates suffering, oppression and terrorism with Islam, and although these things do occur, the examples of them today are very few and far between. It is a shame that the hijab, a symbol of freedom and source of identity, has become instead a symbol of terror.

The disintegrating of the head scarf at the bottom of the painting symbolises the fact that the scarf is immaterial- it does not hide the person wearing it, rather, it allows the true nature or soul of the person to shine through. I chose to use bright colours, texture and pattern to create a happy and serene atmosphere, and the uplifting of the subject's face is designed to reflect hope and contentment.

Like I said, I'm not muslim myself, and compared to many people have a very limited understanding of this issue, so I'm sorry if anything I have said here offends anyone.
Again, sorry about the poor picture quality

Hope you like it!
